University of Surrey Staff Learn British Sign Language

Kathleen has taught BSL as an option for the Global Graduate Award in Languages, as well as a BSL evening course at the University of Surrey for several years now. For this reason she was delighted to be asked by the People, Culture and Inclusion Manager to teach a Deaf Awareness and BSL session for university staff.

The university has now installed hearing loops in all lecture theatres and recognises how important it is for staff to be able to communicate with D/deaf students. Kathleen discussed communication tips and taught fingerspelling, basic meeting and greeting signs, as well as specific BSL linked to student life. This included giving directions to a lost student and assisting an ill student.

Feedback was fabulous including:

“I like how you combine cultural input and language learning.”

“Very engaging and made course enjoyable.”

“I told family, friends and colleagues about your class, how much I liked it, and was very proud when I could show some of the signs I learnt thanks to you.”

Kathleen is very pleased to be teaching more sessions at the university this Summer. Contact us if your organisation would like to arrange bespoke Deaf Awareness and BSL training.
