One of our favourite things is visiting local Scouts, Cubs, Brownies and Rainbows and teaching them British Sign Language. Often we are asked to come when the children are studying for a badge, and we link into this. We discuss what it was like growing up Deaf and answer all their questions, teach everyday signs – and ask them what signs they would like to know, and give the children fingerspelling sheets so they can learn their names. Sometimes we are asked to sign the group ‘Promise’, and we often finish with a song such as “I Can Sing A Rainbow.”
Many children already know a few signs from school or watching television, which they share with us. It is wonderful to see how keen young people are to learn.
We do not charge for these events, but we ask for a donation to cover our time and travel costs.
