It was a pleasure to present at this event last night. Organised by Inclusion Expert Sarah Burrell, I and other speakers discussed how we have overcome challenges in the workplace.
Being Deaf is not a disability but it is a communication barrier in the workplace. For workplaces and events to be accessible to Deaf BSL users it is important that hearing colleagues and other work professionals understand how to work with an interpreter or other communication support worker. Many do not know who to look at or address questions, – Me! Not the interpreter.
Other basic communication tips such as ensuring you have eye contact with the Deaf person before you start talking, using body language, keeping to clear plain English, not muttering or putting your hand over your mouth…. All help ease communication.
I met some very interesting people at the event and it was good to exchange ideas.
