Duke of York’s Theatre Staff Learn BSL

This is a theatre which is committed to being accessible. They host performances with BSL interpreters, captioned performances, and provide hearing enhancement aid when required. Dot Sign Language were approached because Customer Experience Manager Ellen Bleasdale, realised how important it is for the Front of House Team to be able to communicate with Deaf patrons in British Sign Language.

Dot Sign Language Director Kathleen Grehan taught a half day workshop in BSL, interpreted to English. She included communication tips, vocabulary for meeting and greeting theatre goers, how to give directions to seats, toilets, the bar, emergency procedures, and a taste of using BSL placement to describe the theatre.

It was an immensely enjoyable session in stunning surroundings. The theatre team were all keen to learn and practice their new signing skills. We hope they will be welcoming more and more Deaf visitors, and that other theatres follow their example.
