Sign of The Times For BSL?

I was delighted to attend the Manchester BSL Festival last month which was a week-long celebration of our wonderful language. Coinciding with the British Deaf Association Annual Conference, there were lots of activities throughout the week which included storytelling, poetry and comedy.

The celebrations ended on the Saturday with the BSL Party In The Park in the stunning setting of the Cathedral Gardens. We were treated to a wide – variety of performances on the stage which included a signing choir, comedy, and science experiments.

Key speeches were made by Rosie Cooper (who introduced the BSL Bill into the House of Commons), and Rebecca Mansell (Chief Executive of the British Deaf Association).

It was also great to see so many people signing. Remember for my generation, signing was not allowed in schools (including in Ireland where I am from). BSL and ISL have come a long way since then! As Rosie Cooper pointed out, there is still more work to be done with the BSL Act.

Just over 150,000 people use BSL as their primary or preferred language in the UK (source Signed Solutions).

BSL Manchester

We need to make sure that everyone learns to sign – not just the Deaf.  The British Deaf Association are running a campaign to petition the Government to fund free sign language training for the families of newly identified Deaf children. You can find out more by clicking here.
