We were extremely excited to be invited back to the Royal Grammar School in Guildford for the 4th year running to be part of their Languages Day. Such an inspired event – we taught British Sign Language alongside African drumming and Japanese sushi rolling, to give the Year 8 boys a taste of different cultures. Paul Dench and Lisa Duncan taught the BSL sessions with a voice over and interpretation into English.
In only 90 minutes we taught meeting and greeting, Fingerspelling, school subjects, hobbies and had a quiz! The boys were so attentive and we were very impressed with how quickly they picked up the signs.
Our favourite part was answering the boys’ questions about growing up Deaf, Deaf culture and about BSL. They were so enthusiastic and asked excellent questions. We were told afterwards that the boys felt like they learnt a lot in one session. The boys took their Fingerspelling posters home and many said they were keen to practice.
If your school is running a similar event you would like us to be part of, or you are interested in BSL training for your staff please contact us for more information.
