According to the National Deaf Children’s Society…

90% of Deaf children are born to hearing parents. 

And to make matters worse, there’s ZERO funding available from the Government to support these families. 

With that in mind, it becomes the parent’s responsibility to pay for sign language lessons, however statistics show that 70% of parents do not learn British Sign Language (BSL). 

The British Deaf Association (BDA) is currently campaigning for more support for parents of Deaf children in the UK. You can read more here.

With many hearing parents unable to learn sign language, this can lead to Deaf children feeling isolated and struggling with their mental health. 

Learning sign language means that you’re able to support a Deaf child on their journey to becoming integrated within society. 

This might be through a quick conversation that brightens their day, or through helping them to learn a new topic in school, or assisting them in their lives as they enter adulthood. 

Whatever the case may be, learning BSL will help to bridge the gap between the hearing and the deaf world, and will further help advocate for the changes that need to take place within the hearing society.
