Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language »

This course is designed to give students a basic ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in familiar day-to-day environments such as work, school or college, and social occasions.

Learn how to meet & greet, give and understand simple instructions, give directions, discuss the weather. This course includes fingerspelling, meeting and greeting, using numbers, transport methods, discussing interests, family, food and drink, and other everyday vocabulary.

Students will start to learn BSL structure, how to ask questions, grammar and placement.

Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language »

The Level 2 Certificate follows on from Level 1 and develops further the ability to communicate using BSL in a range of social and school, college or work-related contexts. Students will be expected to participate in longer and more open-ended exchanges than in Level 1.

Level 2 will be of interest to those wanting to progress onto higher BSL qualifications which are required for certain careers and roles such as a BSL/English Interpreter, Communication Support Worker, Teacher of the Deaf and other jobs working with the Deaf.

This qualification has been developed in accordance with the National Language Standards at Level 2.

Pre-Level 3 British Sign Language Course »

Our 10 week Pre-Level 3 course is designed to be a ‘bridging’ course for those who have passed BSL Level 2 and want to go on to achieve the Level 3 Certificate but feel that they need more practice and experience.

It is also useful for students who wish to continue learning British Sign Language but do not wish to take an assessment.

The learner will develop an advanced knowledge of the structure and function of British Sign
Language and an understanding of the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture, and will be able to understand and use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations. Level 3 is a nationally-recognised qualification equivalent in standard to a GCE Advanced Level and Level B2 on the common European Framework.

Most Communication Support Worker (CSW) roles require a Level 3 qualification.  This qualification is also suitable for Deaf people who would like to achieve a qualification in their own language.

NEW: BSL Pre-Level 6 »

This will be a relaxed course running over an academic year. It is designed for learners who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in British Sign Language before deciding whether to start BSL Level 6 in September 2020.

It will incorporate in-depth teaching of BSL Linguistics to Level 4 standard which is a requirement in order to join a Level 6 course.

For learners who have passed BSL Level 3. If you are waiting for Level 3 results or need to re-sit assessments you are welcome to apply.

Also suitable for Deaf BSL users wishing to study their own language.

Dot Sign Language Director and qualified teacher Kathleen Grehan is extremely excited to be teaching the NEW Signature Level 6 qualification from September 2019. This course has been completely updated with new content.

Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners will be able to demonstrate language skills equivalent to an undergraduate degree in Modern Languages. If they wish they can then progress to interpreter training.

You must be age 19+ to take this qualification.
